It was quite a day for Josh today. As we reported earlier this morning, Josh started opening his eyes for the first time today. By this evening, he was opening his eyes for extended periods of time and looking around the room, focusing on each person. I probably should just say eye -- singular -- because his right eye still isn't working. And we're not sure if he actually recognizes us.

Josh also responded to verbal commands for the first time today, actually giving high fives to the hospital staff. He doesn't ALWAYS respond to commands, but the fact that he CAN is very important.

We have such a long way to go down this road that it is difficult to get too excited about small successes, but we are pretty excited with this improvement today.

He also had the other drainage tube removed from his left lung and is now breathing entirely on his own. The ventilator is still connected just in case (with only 5% assust) but he doesn't seem to need it.

All in all, it was a pretty good day.

February 19, 2018 The good news is that the young man continues to make progress. With the consent of his doctor, we started to reduce the amount of Keppra (antiseizure medice) Josh takes, and we've noticed that it makes a difference in his "alertness" and "connectedness." Shortly after the accident, Josh's doctors put him on mega doses of two antiseizure medication. Seizures are a significant concern for TBI victims and Josh had many during his first week (petit mal, not grand mal). The medications seem to have done the trick, but the new doctors we visited when we got back to Portland in October were quite surprised at the size of the doses he was taking every day. At Mary's suggestion, they agreed to slowly reduce the amount of Keppra he takes. We've been watching closely to see if there have been any negative consequences, i.e., seizures, but we haven't noticed anything at all and so the weaning process continues. Josh's Accident and Situation

Our 24-year old son Josh was in a very serious motorcycle accident  on Friday  afternoon, June 23, 2017.  He was riding a motorcycle with some friends at a remote campground near Tillamook, OR and lost control and drove into a 50-foot ravine.  (He was wearing a helmet but apparently it was not fastened around his chin so it fell off before it could do much to help.)  His friend was driving in front of him and didn't know he was gone for some time, then turned around to find him at the bottom of the ravine.  Due to the remoteness of the location, it took about 45 minutes to get an emergency vehicle on site.  His injuries were very severe, including head trauma, a collapsed lung and broken bones.  Josh was flown by Life Flight helicopter to OHSU in Portland.  Mary and I got to the hospital at around  7:00 pm  and got to see Josh briefly before he was rushed into emergency surgery.  He was unconscious and in very bad shape, nearl...
