It was a hard day for Josh today.  I got to his room this morning, he told me he was sad.  He rolled over on his side facing away from me and balled up in a prenatal position, then he fell asleep.  When he woke up, he stayed in the same position.  Heidi was there so she went to the other side of the bed and could see how sad he was.  She motioned to me that he was sad and I went over to talk with him.  His face was red and blotchy and his eyes were watery, even though no tears fell.  This is very hard on him.  He was sad all day long.

Despite his unwillingness, I pushed him in a wheelchair around campus twice during the day just to get him out of that small, stinky room.  Other than that, he didn't do much of anything.  He didn't even eat much today.  (At lunch, however, we did sneak him some contraband - a few bites of chili and a Naked drink.)

Josh has really terrible short-term memory.  REALLY terrible.  So even though we've been through the trauma unit doors a bunch of times, he can't remember how to open them.  There is a sign on the wall beside the door that says "Swipe here to open doors," and there is a black box under the sign.  I stopped in front of the sign and asked Josh to open the doors.  As he always does, he tried to stand up from the wheelchair to open the doors.  (He can't stand because he is strapped into the wheelchair.)  I pointed at the black box on the wall and asked if he remembered.  He obviously didn't.  I said, "What does this say?"  He whispered, "Sh...."  I said, "Swipe ... here ..."  Then I quit reading.  It was done slowly and in a whisper, but he read the rest of the sign!!  I was very happy about that!!  But my happiness was tempered when I realized that he could read the words, but he couldn't understand them.

Tomorrow is going to be a big day.  I hope everything with travel and insurance turns out well so Josh and I can fly to Denver on Tuesday.
