We left Denver this morning to attend Sean and Bronte Beecroft's wedding reception and the Beecroft Family Reunion in Seattle. We left Josh in the capable hands of Mary's mom, Donna, and Josh's two friends from Portland, Heidi and Passion. It was a rough day for Josh because of the intentional hydrocephalus, but he battled through in what seemed like good spirits -- certainly a lot better than the last time he had this amount of fluid on his brain three weeks ago.
They did an MRI this afternoon and decided that enough fluid had built up in his ventricles that they needed to start draining again. So they moved the shunt setting from eight (closed) to seven. We weren't there but apparently the doctor had a difficult making this adjustment and needed three or four attempts to get it right, checking by x-ray.
Just when things were settling down for the night -- Mom, Heidi and Passion had all left for the night, we got a call from Craig. Josh was somewhat nonresponsive and had a dilated left eye (right eye is always dilated) so they transported him to the emergency room at Swedish Hospital next door. This happened at about 10:00 pm Mountain Time (about an hour and a half ago). Mom is there at Josh's side, as are the Smiths, some friends of ours who live in Denver who have reached out to us. It is killing us that we can't be there and we may have to fly home first thing tomorrow morning rather than stay for the rest of the reunion, depending on how things go tonight.
As of this entry, Josh is headed for a CT scan after which the doctors will assess his condition. Mom reports that Josh is doing OK. He is apparently waving his arms in the air as though he is leading a band, which is exactly what he did the last time we sat in the ER in Swedish needing to drain fluid from his brain just a short three weeks ago. Our good friend Deanna will surely remember that experience.
Thank you all for your ongoing support and prayers. We are still very far from the finish line in this exhausting marathon.
