Happy last day of August! It started rough. Josh threw up a lot this morning. Morning sickness, I guess. 😜
As it turned out, the MRI people couldn't fit Josh in their schedule until 8:00 tonight, and since Makley leaves at 7:00, he wouldn't be able to look through the scans anyway. So we cancelled the MRI and agreed that if I think Josh needs to be seen, the on-call doctor will get a quick CT scan and the results of it will determine the shunt setting. Perfect!
In ST, Josh was given a paper that had drawings of 12 fruits on it and he had to name as many as he could. He named 8. Then he was given a paper that had drawings of 12 vegetables on it and he had to name as many as he could. He named 5. In fairness to Josh, magnify the picture below and tell me what you think the bottom, middle vegetable is. I wouldn't have guessed it either.
Next, he met with Dr. Schraa for Neuropsychology. Schraa listed numbers (e.g., 1-7), and Josh had to repeat the numbers (e.g., 1-7). Josh did well up to 4 numbers, but once Sschraa listed 5 numbers, Josh began transposing the 3rd and 4th numbers. Always the 3rd and 4th numbers. I thought that was interesting. Then Schraa did the list again, but Josh was supposed to repeat the numbers backwards (e.g., 1-7 would be 7-1). Josh got only the 2-digit numbers. He couldn't do 5-6-8.
Then Josh had OT. There was a wall of letters and numbers, and his therapist would say something like "Hand me the 'E'." Josh's job was to find the 'E,' remove it from the wall, and hand it to her. He got the first one, but he didn't get any after that.
Then she had him pick buttons out of a tupperware container and say the name of the color. He didn't do well on that at all. He got light blue and dark blue. Red he called "orange-red," but then he picked up an orange button and couldn't guess the color.
Then, I think just to fill the rest of the hour, she did stretching exercises with him. All the stretching was with his arms. He did what he was told, but he didn't like it.
Next was PT. His therapist walked with him for 30 minutes and then a different therapist spent 30 minutes stretching his legs. It looked relaxing to me, but Josh said it hurt.
The weird thing that happened today is that Josh was assigned a one-on-one BA, which is great! But I'm not sure why the change. So beginning at about 2:00 this afternoon, I wasn't alone. There was a BA in the room with me at all times, which was fine, but it was a little weird when I was talking with my sisters and my daughter on the phone. Now she knows that my sister is busy planning a wedding, I'm sick with a sore throat and a fever, my grandsons are adorable, and my renter's rent is late.
Because there is a BA with Josh, in his room for the rest of the night, I feel free to leave early and hopefully sleep off this sickness. So peace out.
PS: After I posted the blog, I sat on Josh's bed and asked him if he'd like to say the prayer tonight. He said he would, but when I closed my eyes, he didn't say anything. It is SO hard for him to come up with words. So I asked if he needed help. He said he did. So I said the prayer and he repeated it verbatim (the language stayed clean). I felt happy that he wanted to pray! (And, again, it was weird with a stranger in the room, but hopefully it wasn't too weird for her.)
All ya'all have a good night!

It sounds like a great missionary tool to me! And it seems all in all you had a grand day!!! Prayers continuing for more and better progress ...
ReplyDeleteThe fact that he recognizes and remembers sometimes means it's in there. I suppose as connections heal, the recognition and memory will be more dependable. I'm glad you are making notes about how the staff is helping Joshua heal connections.
