Josh was very agitated when Mary arrived at the hospital this morning. She asked him if he was feeling anxious and he nodded. She asked if he knew why. He nodded. She asked if he could tell her why. He nodded. She asked, "Why are you anxious?" He said, "Someone's going to shoot me." She said, "With a needle?" He shook his head. "With a gun?" He nodded his head. She tried to calm him, but it's virtually impossible to calm someone who can't comprehend what's happening. He was obviously very frightened. Mary talked with the doctor about it. He told her that Josh has "ICU delirium." It could be, but Mary asked the nurse if she'd talked with Josh about the surgery today. She said she had. Mary thinks Josh knew something big and frightening was going to happen, but couldn't understand - so for him big and frightening equated to someone coming to shoot him with a gun. He was scared for about three hours.

It was a long day waiting for surgery, and a good thing Mary was with Josh. In the late morning the nurse handed Joshua a pina colada milkshake, and about an hour and a half later, the speech pathologist gave him graham crackers! Had he consumed either of those, it would have prevented surgery today.

Finally, at 4:00, the anesthesiologist came to take Josh to surgery. As soon as the anesthesiologist and the RN took Josh to surgery, Paul's phone rang. It was VISA calling about potential fraudulent charges. We spent the next half hour discussing nearly $1500 in fraudulent charges on our credit card. First vandalism, now thievery.

We waited for five hours. At 9:00 the doctor came into the waiting room and explained the surgery. It went well. He attached the synthetic skull to the original bone with 8 titanium plates and then inserted the internal shunt. Over the next hour they extubated Josh then took him for a CT scan. We will get those results tomorrow. He was finally brought to his room at 10:00. His face was white at first, but he is looking better now. We will probably stay with him here for a while before going home. We are feeling exhausted, relieved and very, very grateful to have this done.
