The nurse this morning was WAY late with Josh's morning medications, causing him to be 20 minutes late to Speech. He was shown a drawing of a kitchen, and he told the pathologist everything in the picture (except he got cupboards/cabinets wrong). Then he was shown a drawing of a bedroom and he was supposed to tell the pathologist the items in the bedroom (lamp, nightstand, bed, blanket, pillow, etc.). He didn't get any of them right. The same thing happened when she showed him a drawing of a closet.

PT was the same as always: walking and stretching.

In OT, the therapist had a box. (Imagine 10" tall, 20" side, and 4" deep, with a center divider that is 2 1/2" taller than the box.) One side of the box was filled with 1" blocks. She asked him to move the blocks from the full side to the empty side, one block at a time. She did this once with his right hand and once with his left hand. When she tried this activity about 5 weeks ago, Josh was unable to do it. He would grab a handfuls of blocks and couldn't manage to grab only one block. He was able to do it today. Slowly, but he did it.

Then she put 50 cards from a deck of cards on a table, and she gave Josh another deck. His job was to match the cards. So, if the King of Spades was a card on the table, he was supposed to put the King of Spades from his deck on top of her card. She said this activity should be able to be done in 3-4 minutes. Josh did it in 5 1/2 minutes, which was faster than she thought he would be able to do it.

This afternoon Josh had another MRI to check on fluid levels in his brain. The idea is to turn down the shunt again, if possible. We didn't get any results, so hopefully tomorrow.

Josh takes so long to eat his food that it is downright cold before he is finished. Two and a half hours after he started dinner tonight, he was eating cold Chicken Parmesan. We said, "Do you want us to heat that up for you? It's super cold." He replied, "No it's fine for me," and took another bite. Yuck!

Josh loves to look out his new bedroom window and people watch.

He especially likes to watch people cross the bridges. So tonight he suddenly pulled away from his dinner and wheeled out the door. We said, "Where are you headed?" No answer. So Paul followed. He wheeled down to the bridge and started across. Again, "Where are you headed?" Again, no answer. He wheeled to the far end of the bridge, stopped, turned around, and looked back at his bedroom window. Then he wheeled back to his room. No explanation was ever provided.

The picture below has Josh crossing the top bridge behind his BA, who is carrying his lunch.

  1. Joshua lives in my heart as a youngster. He was so kind, peaceful and unassuming. He was not the kid who was always looking for attention. He didn't say much, but he was always curious. Therefore, he put a dime in Becca's cigarette lighter and blew the lighter out, tore all the dust covers off his grandpa's precious books to discover the "real" book hidden under the covers. I love that precious boy and I think we have him back. Mortality can be ugly and it took Joshua into strange paths. Thank you both for hanging in there and bringing Joshua back! Thank you for your daily blog and the great pictures. How did you ever think of the picture above?

    1. Josh likes watching people cross the bridge so I thought he'd like to know what HE looks like crossing the bridge.
