Josh had a good day, thanks in large part to two great techs. First, he was with Chris. Here's a photo of Chris. You can see how much he and Josh look alike, especially the beard.
Chris got Josh up and started him on breakfast. Paul got there soon after. It took Josh close to two hours to finish his breakfast. This is because he is still chewing each bite for a long time but is now eating more than in the past. This isn't a real problem on the weekends, but won't work when we are trying to get Josh to a class on week days.
After breakfast, Paul took Josh out in the hallway and let him lead wherever he wanted. Josh wheeled into the PT gym and straight to the stationary bike. In the past, Josh weakly pedals the bike while he messes with all the buttons and switches on the display. But this time Josh seemed more interested in actually using the bike for its true purpose -- exercise. Josh pedaled that bike for just over ONE HOUR. He didn't pedal super hard, so I'm not sure it was THAT effective of exercise, but still, give the young man some credit!
After the bike, Josh led Paul to the T-Rec room (the site of yesterday's escape) and the two played ice hockey for another 30 minutes or so. Chris then came to T-Rec and took over air hockey duty so that Paul could head back to the apartment to check on Mary.
Mary is still pretty darn sick. She had another rough night and woke up this morning feeling groggy and dizzy, probably because of the Xanax she took before going to bed. We decided Mary should stay home today and try to get some rest. Mary was sound asleep when Paul got back at noon. At Mary's suggestion, Paul ordered some take-out from a Thai restaurant not far away and the two enjoyed some green curry and Drunken Noodles. After lunch, Paul buckled to peer pressure and followed the crowd -- he took a long nap.
After his nap, Paul headed back to the hospital to check on Josh. Haley (our favorite tech) had taken over for Chris and reported that Josh hadn't eaten much for lunch and had just fallen asleep for a nap. Josh woke up soon thereafter and Haley took him down to the gym to play some basketball while rocking out to some Journey. She said that Josh was singing along to the songs, so I guess we was remembering the lyrics?
Josh started an early lunch at 4:45. TWO HOURS LATER, he had pretty much eaten everything on his plate, which was quite a bit. Paul and Haley were a little concerned that he had eaten TOO much and might throw up, as he has done many times before. But I guess he was hungry because he kept it all down.
After finally finishing his dinner, Josh stood up from his chair and went straight to his bed. He was probably beat from all the chewing! He was nearly asleep when Paul remembered that he needed a shower, so Haley and Paul pulled him (literally) out of bed and dragged him (metaphorically) to the bathroom for a shower. Josh did most of the washing himself, which was good, and Haley and Paul got him dressed and back into bed. They watched some Pirates of the Caribbean on TV, but Josh was pretty tuckered. So the nurses came in and gave him his nighttime meds so he could go to sleep.
Just before the nurses came in, Josh started doing something that he has done in the past as he suffers from fluid on the brain -- waving his arms in the air in some repeating pattern, over and over and over again. This was a bit alarming, as it has been an indication of problems in the past, but Josh seemed quite alert and connected, so the nurses decided just to watch him carefully through the night and reassess in the morning. Josh was ready to fall asleep at about 8:30 when Paul left for the night.
